The RX-A8A is in the Goldilocks zone. It has it where it counts.

Though I feel the review goes too far down the road of doom and gloom. It does bring up a few important considerations. Chief among them is if you require full 8k\4K@120HZ. Look elsewhere.
This receiver does not support this new standard at the time I am writing this.

That being said I buy a AVR for movies and not gaming. I do not know of any current Blue Ray player that outputs 8K or 4K@120HZ.
My Oppo BD203 and Panasonic DP UB9000 only give me 4k@60HZ so I do not need anything that supports those things. What I want out of receiver is high quality amplification and stellar build quality.
The RX-A8A meets that criterion in spades.

I looked at Marantz 8015, Anthem MRX 1140, and NAD T778. This unit offered me quality AB amplification on 11 channels, and unlike the Anthem and NAD no hybrid class D tricks.
It has three focuses. One, quality amp stages. Two, well-built chassis and quality parts. Three, cutting-edge software that does room correction and AV processing.
Well on AV processing and room correction it is no better or worse than the others. I have used Audyssey, ARC and now YPAO. They all miss the mark, and required additional tweaking.
YPAO puts the emphasis on bass output over midrange. First time I ever had to correct for having too much of it. With Audyssey and ARC I had always boost bass output.
Yamaha's Sound AI, I did not find all that helpful. I do not hear like a machine, so I turn it off most of the time. To be fair, I also did that with both the Anthem and Marantz equivalents.
Yamaha to bass heavy, the other two makes that I owned the treble was too hot.

On Music this has really good sound. I think most will enjoy its presentation. However, out of everything I auditioned. I found the Anthem products reproduce music the best.
Yamaha excels at playing back movies. Dialogue in particular is stunning. This is the first AV receiver where my bride did constantly ask me what the actors were just saying.
Even with her poor hearing, she could make out the dialogue.

Conclusion is this is an AVR with outstanding build and amplification, still available at a fair price. I really took a hard look at the Anthem MRX-1140.
If they were available, I would have bought one this summer. However now that it costs a $1000.00 more than RX-A8A. I could not stomach the cost.
It is one of the best for watching movies, and offers really good sound for music listening.
Sure, other makes have the latest and greatest in processing and features. However, the RX-A8A gives it where it counts the most.
When Yamaha, releases the firmware update. Aventage product will be one of top, if not the top AVR's when comes to price, build quality, and performance.
All the others I audition currently cost more. That may change, but so far Yamaha has at least held their price steady. Plus the RX-A8A has 5 year warranty to boot.

Ordered in July, received last week. Well worth the wait. The only downside is set up, not for a weak stomach or an amateur installer.
