New Look, Same Great Craftsmanship

When Sonus Faber unveiled the Lumina series in 2020, people were happy to see more affordable products come from the brand. With the new Lumina line, Sonus Faber brought out a top-quality speaker with the same Italian Handmade attention to detail that the more expensive products possess. At Audio Advice, we were so impressed with the Lumina series that we did a full product review for all the models.

For 2024, Sonus Faber wanted to up their game again with the Lumina series and decided to come out with an updated version of their popular Lumina II bookshelf and Lumina V Floorstanding speaker. These new models are the Lumina II Amator and the Lumina V Amator.

The first thing you will notice is the finish. These new Lumina models now have a 45° angled veneer. This new look makes these two models distinct from the other Lumina Models. Three colors are available: Glossy Red, Glossy Wenge, and Glossy Walnut, giving users more options to match their equipment racks or other furniture. This takes the already great and high-value Lumina series to a new level. Being that these speakers are produced in Italy means that Sonus Faber is serious about bringing high-value but also well-made products. The kind of products that will last and be heirloom quality.

Upgraded Sound

Since Sonus Faber knocked it out of the park the first time with the Lumina series, they wanted to keep the design the same. After Sonus Faber's work improving the Homage Amati G5 and Guarneri G5 crossovers, they tested the Lumina II and V to see if the higher crossover frequency would boost the drivers' performance for the Lumina series. They discovered that increasing the crossover point improved the precision of staging, the perception of bass, and timing improvements. This allows for much more realism and resolution and provides an even more convincing 3-dimensional sound stage. For the Lumina II Amator, the crossover point has been increased to 2,600Hz. This is up from 1,800Hz and gives the speaker a little more performance. For the Lumina V Amator, the crossover point increased to 2850Hz, up 250Hz from the standard Lumina V. Sonus Faber only increased the price for this upgrade series only 17% from the standard Lumina II and V. This is a lot of performance upgrade for the money and is well worth it in our opinion.

The Lumina Amator series uses the same Damped Apex Dome tweeter and cellulose cones midbass driver as the standard Lumina series. For the Lumina II Amator, this means a 29mm soft dome tweeter and 150mm cone midbass.

Floor standing Speakers

For the Lumina V Amator, Sonus Faber kept the same 29mm tweeter and incorporated a 150mm midrange driver with a pulp cone. The Lumina V Amator uses two 165mm cone woofers that feature all-natural pulp sandwich cones for bass duty. Using pure pulp in its midrange and natural material for its soft dome tweeter gives the Sonus Faber Lumina series its smooth and natural tonality. Sonus Faber also makes all of its drivers in-house, allowing them to design the driver that will work best in each scenario, not having to rely on working with off-the-shelf drivers.

Sonus Faber is on the right path with the new Lumina Amator models. Giving people an upscale experience at a more affordable price is always good. If you love the Sonus Faber Lumina line but wish they had more finish options or a boost in performance, the new Lumina Amator speakers might be what you are looking for.
